BONG PEÑERA - Self Titled Album
Bong Penera's Self titled third album delves deeper into the influences and musical interests of this Philippine Jazz music giant. Here the original album liner notes says Something funk and something from the movies:" and that pretty much sums up the track selection by Penera for his particular outing.
Book ended by the Samba inflected " Sa Dako Pa Roon" and ending with its moodily beautiful reprise. Penera wanted to make the best of the space and time given him by this record. The songs usually go off on solos (tasteful one at that) the show off Penera and his backing band's adventurous spirit, The Latin-laced beats of instrumental "Ode" has that familiarity" Like you've heard it already, then it become this surging number that seem to soundtrack the warm Manila nights many many summers ago.
Like any Jazz players worth their salt, Bong Penera uses music pieces as mood about like on the piano-decked original "Poem Blue" which Echo Bill Evans, The instrumental Jazz number "Sinta" Likewise plays on a familiar theme but is bossafied by Penera's treatment.
Acid Jazz sounds seep through on B-Sides "Rhapsody" and shades of Carlos Jobein show up on his original "Melancholy Dreams" There's more of course but that's for the avid jazz music fan and OPM fan to discover.
The Bong Penera Album is a rare record that is now made available again through Vicor Records Classic Vinyl series. This re-issue is reproduced abroad on 180-gram vinyl.
