But if they were falling apart during the making of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Rumours\"\u003eRumours\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, they were officially broken and shattered during the making of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Tusk\"\u003eTusk\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, and that disconnect between bandmembers resulted in a sprawling, incoherent, and utterly brilliant 20-track double album. At the time of its release, it was a flop, never reaching the top of the charts and never spawning a true hit single, despite two well-received Top Ten hits. Coming after the monumental \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Rumours\"\u003eRumours\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, this was a huge disappointment, but the truth of the matter is that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Fleetwood%20Mac\"\u003eFleetwood Mac\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e couldn't top that success no matter how hard they tried, so it was better for them to indulge themselves and come up with something as unique as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Tusk\"\u003eTusk\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Lindsey%20Buckingham\"\u003eLindsey Buckingham\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e directed both \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Fleetwood%20Mac\"\u003eFleetwood Mac\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Rumours\"\u003eRumours\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, but he dominates here, composing nearly half the album, and giving \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Christine%20McVie\"\u003eChristine McVie\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e's and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Stevie%20Nicks\"\u003eStevie Nicks\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e' songs an ethereal, floating quality that turns them into welcome respites from the seriously twisted immersions into \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Buckingham\"\u003eBuckingham\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e's id. This is the ultimate cocaine album -- it's mellow for long stretches, and then bursts wide open in manic, frantic explosions, such as the mounting tension on \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/\" the=\"\" ledge=\"\"\u003e\"The Ledge\"\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e or the rampaging \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/\" that=\"\" s=\"\" enough=\"\" for=\"\" me=\"\"\u003e\"That's Enough for Me,\"\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e or the marching band-driven paranoia of the title track, all of which are relieved by smooth, reflective work from all three songwriters. While \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/McVie\"\u003eMcVie\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Nicks\"\u003eNicks\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003econtribute some excellent songs, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Buckingham\"\u003eBuckingham\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e owns this record with his nervous energy and obsessive production, winding up with a fussily detailed yet wildly messy record unlike any other. This is mainstream madness, crazier than \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Buckingham\"\u003eBuckingham\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e's idol \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Brian%20Wilson\"\u003eBrian Wilson\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and weirder than any number of cult classics. Of course, that's why it bombed upon its original release, but \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Tusk\"\u003eTusk\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e is a bracing, weirdly affecting work that may not be as universal or immediate as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/s\/Rumours\"\u003eRumours\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, but is every bit as classic.
